I do the same thing!
My parents have been feeding this one cat for 5 years, and they call him (or her) Sam. Sam (a huge black and white Norwegian Forest cat) has one eye that squints a little, like maybe he injured it or something a while back. So, I call him "One-eyed Sam", and have this whole story about him being a pirate, looking out at the world with his one good eye.
Yay! Now I don't feel so crazy! Er, but I don't have any kids to tell stories to... I have no clue why I do it, it just happens.
